One driver killed and another injured in crash on South Carolina road, cops say

One person was killed Tuesday in a crash on a Midlands road that left another person hospitalized, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 7:50 p.m. in Lee County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A 1995 Ford Escort was driving south on U.S. 15, according to Ridgeway. The Ford collided head-on with a 2008 Infiniti sedan that was turning left onto Thames Road from the northbound side of U.S. 15, Ridgeway said.

The Ford driver died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Ford driver.

Ridgeway said the Infiniti driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital. Further information on the Infiniti driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anybody involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 55 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

This was the second deadly crash of the new year in Lee County, where seven people died in 2025 wrecks, according to DPS data.
