Crash blocks all westbound lanes on interstate near Malfunction Junction

A crash on Thursday morning blocked one side of a major interstate running through Columbia near the area called Malfunction Junction, creating delays for drivers on the morning commute.

All the westbound lanes on Interstate 20 were temporarily closed following the collision that happened at about 5:25 a.m., according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The crash occurred near Exit 64B on I-20, which is the junction with I-26 in Richland County.

Information about the cause of the collision, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available.

There was no word if the wreck caused any injuries.

Traffic cameras showed that vehicles were backed up for miles on I-20, as emergency responders were at the scene of the crash.

Information about when the lanes would reopen and the scene would be cleared was not available.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area and the traffic jam if possible, otherwise they should expect delays.
