One person killed in crash on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

One person was killed Sunday night in a crash on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. in Sumter County, said Cpl. David Jones.

A 2017 Ford Fusion was driving south on Prosser Avenue, according to Jones. Near the intersection with West Foxworth Mill Road the car hit a pedestrian, Jones said.

EMS took the pedestrian to an area hospital, where that person died, according to Jones.

The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

No other injuries were reported by the Highway Patrol.

There was no word if the driver, or anyone else in the car, was wearing a seatbelt, but the collision continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through May 31, at least 340 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least nine people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, and 25 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
