Here’s what York County leaders say is planned for the Fort Mill Parkway improvement
Leaders with York County’s Pennies for Progress met with the public Wednesday night in Fort Mill to discuss improvements along Sutton Road, Spratt Street and Fort Mill Parkway.
A two-mile widening job there is part of Pennies 4, a list of projects approved by voters countywide in 2017. Pennies director Patrick Hamilton talked about widening half a mile on U.S. 21 as part of the project, and a separate but connected job at the intersection of Fort Mill Parkway and U.S. 21.
The full Sutton, Spratt and Fort Mill Parkway project runs from I-77 at Sutton to the railroad bridge on the parkway at US Foods.
Maps showed a few new details. Sidewalks and bike lanes will go on both sides of the widened road. The two entrance points to the new Elizabeth neighborhood will remain right-in, right-out on the parkway with turnaround points for drivers from the neighborhood who need to exit left.
Maps also showed a pedestrian crossing beneath the widened roadway to connect Elizabeth development underway now with planned commercial or residential development on the opposite side of Fort Mill Parkway. In past months and years, town leaders have discussed a connection in the area that could provide pedestrian access all the way to the Catawba River.
Wednesday night’s presentation, though, largely focused on roads. Here’s an update from Hamilton on what drivers should expect:
