Traffic near a Rock Hill high school will change soon with bridge closure
A Rock Hill bridge replacement will reroute traffic near South Pointe High School for the rest of the school year.
The city posted an update on its Facebook page Tuesday that the South Carolina Department of Transportation will close the East Robertson Road bridge over Wildcat Creek on Jan. 5. That’s the day teachers return to Rock Hill schools from winter break, one day before students return.
Bridge replacement will last until June, according to the post. The post didn’t list a project cost.
South Pointe is the newest and smallest of Rock Hill’s three high schools, with 1,138 students this fall. Both the school and its athletic facilities use entrances off Neely Road for car or bus traffic. A school baseball field sits at the corner of Neely and Robertson roads, near the bridge.
The bridge is less than half a mile from the high school’s main entrance, using Neely and Robertson roads. It’s more than three miles using the proposed detour, turning right out of the main entrance, of Neely, Crawford, Ogden and Robertson roads.
Robertson Road will only be open to local traffic during construction. Local traffic won’t be able to cross the bridge.
The Neely Road school entrance has 1,700 vehicles per day pass by it, according to transportation department traffic counts. The bridge being replaced serves 2,600 vehicles per day.
