Up to 8 inches snow fell near Rock Hill. Monday closings for some still icy roads

As much as 8 inches of snow fell in some parts of the Rock Hill region Saturday, leaving roads dangerous as below-freezing conditions linger at least through Monday.

Area schools were already scheduled to be off for students Monday for teacher work days, but Tuesday remains unclear as forecasted temperatures remain at or below freezing.

Most areas in York, Chester, and Lancaster counties reported around 6 inches of snow up to more than 8.5 inches in Indian Land in northern Lancaster County, said meteorologist Thomas Winesett of the National Weather Service.

Fort Mill and Tega Cay had 7 inches while Chester and Lancaster reported around 6 inches, Winesett said.

The area had heavy snow but missed a band of even heavier snow to the north in the Charlotte region of that reached double figures.

Roads: Still snow-covered Sunday, cold temperatures hang on

Temperatures were expected to top out at around the 32 degree freezing mark Sunday even with sunny skies, Winesett said.

Some areas that receive direct sunlight on roads will see melting, but shady spots on secondary roads would not melt much Sunday, he said.

Then Sunday night into Monday morning, temperatures for Rock Hill are expected to drop again to as low as the single digits before warming to close to 40 degrees Monday, the NWS forecast showed.

It will be a typical melt during the day and re-freeze at night Sunday night and Monday night, Winesett said.

Interstate 77 in York County had been mainly cleared and showed light traffic, according to S.C. Department of Transportation cameras.

Road conditions remained slick on secondary roads Sunday, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson of the S.C. Highway Patrol. Troopers reported a few incidents late Saturday into Sunday of cars that had gone off the road but did not respond to any fatalities or serious injury crashes, Davidson said.

Deputies in York County reported snowy roads even with bright sunshine Sunday, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office. At 9:30 a.m., S.C. 274 near Lake Wylie and S.C. 5 in York were not clear, deputies said.

In the city of Rock Hill, many roads remain snow covered, said Rock Hill Police Department Lt. Michael Chavis.

Closings: Schools off Monday, Tuesday unclear

School districts in all three counties were scheduled to be closed for students on Monday anyway for staff development, according to district websites for Rock Hill, Fort Mill, York, and Clover districts, as well as county schools districts in Lancaster and Chester.

Winthrop University has closed its campus in Rock Hill for Monday and will use online classes, the school said in a statement.

York Technical College is closed Monday and Tuesday with online classes only, the school said on its website.

Clinton College in Rock Hill will be closed Monday and use online learning, the school said on its Facebook page.

York County will open government offices at 11 a.m Monday, a statement said. That includes the Moss Justice Center courthouse in York and the tax collector and assessor offices.

It is possible that some of the county’s 16 recycling and collection centers will not be able to open Monday by 11 a.m., said Lisa Wolf-Chason, the county’s public information director. County officials will know which collection centers will be open by 10 a.m.

Lancaster County government has closed its offices on Monday, according to its Facebook page.

Rock Hill garbage pickup is delayed by a day all week, the city said in a statement.
