Who’s No. 2? Shane Beamer hints at South Carolina’s post-spring QB depth chart
It’s certainly not official, but Shane Beamer gave insight Tuesday into the Gamecocks’ quarterback depth chart coming out of spring.
There is no question, of course, about the starter. Redshirt junior LaNorris Sellers will be back for his third season as QB1, playing under his fourth offensive coordinator in Kendal Briles.
But there is mystery around the order of the guys behind him.
The battle to be Sellers’ backup in 2026 was between Bowling Green transfer Lucian Anderson III, true freshman Landon Duckworth and redshirt freshman Cutter Woods.
Coming into the spring, Woods was the favorite to earn the QB2 title for no other reason than he had already spent a year at South Carolina learning behind Sellers.
But, certainly, that familiarity became somewhat of a moot point when the Gamecocks hired a brand new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Briles was looking at all three quarterbacks with fresh eyes.
After 15 spring practices (the Gamecocks finished their final spring workout Saturday), it seems that Woods is heading into the summer as the backup quarterback.
On Tuesday, Beamer said that indirectly while noting, “I don’t think it’s any state secrets, Landon and Lucian would typically split those third-group reps.”
Now, things can always change. Perhaps Duckworth — the former four-star prospect from Jackson, Alabama — could make strides during the summer and challenge Woods for the backup job come fall. Or, maybe, Woods will continue to ascend and look more and more like Sellers’ replacement come 2027.
“(Woods) is a smart guy. He’s a hard worker,” Sellers said last week. “He’s always here just getting extra work. If he’s confused by something, he’s not afraid to ask. He’s also taking those mental reps. He’s getting more reps than Duck and all that. So, he has the live reps.”
