Landon Peavy of the Andrew Jackson baseball team is The Herald’s Athlete of the Week.

The Volunteer junior went 8-for-14 at the plate with four doubles, a home run, 12 RBI, five stolen bases, and 10 runs scored as Andrew Jackson went 5-0 last week.

There were 7,072 votes cast in this week’s poll. Peavy earned 48% of the vote, and Skylar Huffman of Andrew Jackson softball earned 35% of the vote.

Candidates for Athlete of the Week

Taylor Ames-Alexander, Lancaster softball. The senior Bruin hit five home runs as Lancaster went 4-0 this week to stay unbeaten at 6-0 this season. Ames-Alexander’s best effort came when she hit three home runs in a 19-0 win at Chester on March 24. The senior also helped Lancaster win 3-2 at York (eight innings), win 10-0 at Indian Land and win 8-6 over A.C. Flora earlier in the week.

Alivia Cleveland, Fort Mill track. The Yellow Jacket eighth-grader won the 3200-meter run at the Bob Jenkins Invitational in Spartanburg on March 26. Cleveland won the 3200-meter run for the second week in a row after winning the same event at the Clash of the Carolinas at Cuthbertson High on March 19.

Shanyia Gray, York track. Gray won the 400-meter dash in 1:01.42 at the Bob Jenkins Invitational in Spartanburg on March 26. Gray also finished 10th in the triple-jump (31-11) at the same event.

Skylar Huffman, Andrew Jackson softball. The Andrew Jackson ace tossed a perfect game with 14 strikeouts in seven innings of work to lead the Volunteers to a 9-0 win over North Central on March 22. Huffman also pitched a complete-game with two strikeouts in a 4-3 win at Marlboro County on March 21. Andrew Jackson is 8-4 this season.

Matthew Prete, Lancaster track. The Bruin junior ran a school-record 9:39.52 to win the 3200-meter run at the Bob Jenkins Invitational at Spring Valley High on March 26. Prete’s time was nearly 49 seconds faster than the previous 3200-meter run school-record of 10:28.

Sam Rich, Catawba Ridge track. The Catawba Ridge senior won the Adidas Raleigh Relays with a time of 9:06.41 on March 24 at N.C. State. Rich is a Notre Dame University commit.

Deaton Reed, Indian Land golf. The Warrior freshman shot a three-under par, 33, to earn medalist honors at Lancaster Golf Club on March 24. Reed’s efforts helped the Indian Land team to victory over Chester and Nation Ford the same day.

Camryn Rogers, Nation Ford soccer. The Falcon senior captain accounted for both goals with a goal and an assist to lead Nation Ford to a 2-0 win over Fort Mill on March 22. Rogers has six goals and four assists for Nation Ford (8-5) this season.

Trevor Testerman, Catawba Ridge baseball. The Copperhead senior went 2-for-4 in a 3-2 loss at York on March 21. Testerman also went 1-for-3 in an 8-2 win over York on March 24. And he finished off the week strong going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored in an 8-7 win at York to win the series on March 25. Testerman, a Newberry College commit, is batting .444 with six doubles, a triple, two home runs, 20 RBI and 14 runs scored for Catawba Ridge (9-3) this season.

Reade Ward, Chester golf. The Cyclone junior shot a 43 to earn medalist honors in a win at Great Falls on March 21.

Cooper Zohner, Clover baseball: The Blue Eagle junior was consistently powerful in his team’s 3-0 series sweep over Fort Mill this past week. His best game? He went 2-for-3 with a home run and two more RBI in a 4-0 win at Fort Mill on March 24. Clover is 10-1 overall this season.
