High School Football

Check out the 2020 football schedules for York, Chester, Lancaster county high schools

Although they went undefeated in the regular season for the first time in the school’s modern history and earned their first region championship since 2006 last season, the Clover Blue Eagles headed into the 2019 high school football playoffs with a proverbial chip on their shoulders.

There was a widespread sentiment that they were untested — that their prolific offensive numbers and lopsided wins were caused by the weak schedule they played rather than the strong team they were.

Rest assured: That won’t happen this season.

Clover will open its 2020 football season against Dorman. The Cavaliers and Blue Eagles are well-acquainted: They met in last year’s Upper State semifinals and put on a show in front of a sold-out crowd. Dorman, the eventual state Runner-Up, went on to win, 45-42, on a game-winning field goal.

Clover also will play its longtime rival, York, and two other Spartanburg-area schools, Spartanburg and Boiling Springs. Clover also will play the trinity of Rock Hill schools — even though South Pointe, Rock Hill and Northwestern won’t be in the same region as Clover in 2020.

As for the rest of the 5A crew, Fort Mill will open against new-in-town rival, Catawba Ridge. Nation Ford will begin its season against Indian Land, a matchup that resulted in an entertaining win for the Falcons in 2019. Northwestern will face South Pointe on Aug. 22, in District Three Stadium. And Rock Hill will open against Greenville.

In 4A, Adam Hastings begins his head coaching tenure at Indian Land with four straight 5A opponents in Nation Ford, Northwestern, Fort Mill and Rock Hill. Catawba Ridge will begin its season against the two other Fort Mill high schools and also will play the formidable Chester Cyclones in its non-region schedule. York will open against Mauldin, and Lancaster will open against Crestwood.

South Pointe, which won its region and went undefeated in the regular season last year, will play Charlotte’s Myers Park in Week 2 in Bank of America Stadium, the home of the Carolina Panthers.

Chester, the sole 3A school in The Herald’s coverage area and the 2018 state champions, will play Fort Mill, Lancaster, South Pointe and Catawba Ridge in its non-region schedule. The Cyclones will end their regular season on a bye, as per custom in recent years.

After an inaugural season without any home games, 2A’s Legion Collegiate Academy Lancers have scheduled four home games this season. Legion athletic director Strait Herron said last month that the program is still searching for a facility to play their home football games.

Andrew Jackson (2A) has an opening-week bye before playing Catawba Ridge in Week 4 and Indian Land in Week 5.

Finally, in 1A, Great Falls and Lewisville continue their long-standing rivalry in 2020 in Week 8. Great Falls won last season’s rivalry edition in overtime, 32-26.
