Northwestern quarterback Will Mattison is The Herald’s Football Player of the Week
Will Mattison of the Northwestern football team has been voted The Herald’s Football Player of the Week.
The 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior quarterback had another day in the office in a 50-7 win over Rock Hill on Oct. 29: He completed 21 of 31 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 38 yards and another score in the rivalry contest.
On the season, Mattison has completed 180 of 280 passes for 2,491 yards and 34 touchdowns — while rushing for 269 yards and nine more scores — for a Northwestern team (9-1) that has won nine straight games. He’s also a South Carolina Mr. Football finalist and a North-South All-Star game selection.
Mattison and the Trojans begin their playoff run against Boiling Springs on Friday night.
There were 12,717 votes cast in this week’s poll. Mattison earned 42.6% of the vote, Drew Hardin of Indian Land earned 36.6% of the vote; and Zay McCrorey of South Pointe earned 20.9% of the vote.

Drew Hardin, Indian Land receiver. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior wide receiver had four catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns to lead Indian Land to a 38-6 win over Lancaster on Oct. 29. Hardin, who only played in the first half of the Lancaster victory, also returned a punt for a touchdown in the second quarter. Indian Land is 5-3 this season.
Zay McCrorey, South Pointe quarterback. The South Pointe senior quarterback completed 18 of 28 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-0 win over York on Oct. 29 that delivered the Stallions their eighth straight region championship. McCrorey (6-foot-5, 234 pounds) also ran for another score in the game. South Pointe (7-1) has won four straight.
