Video: high school football preview for Week 5

Rock Hill (1-4) at No. 7 York (4-1)

Last week: Rock Hill lost to Sumter 10-7; York beat Boiling Springs 40-20

Last meeting: York won 17-13 (2014)

Key players: RHHS - Sr. DL Alan Salgado, Jr. RB Kadarrius Baxter, Sr. DB Kentrell McCrorey, Sr. LB Khari Hunter. YCHS - Sr. RB Brandon Garvin, Sr. OT Ryan Enniss, Sr. DE Deivonne Chalk, Sr. LB Jamar Griffin.

Need to know: Rock Hill’s defense played great in the loss to Sumter, forcing Gamecocks turnovers in its defensive red zone on multiple occasions. But the Bearcats’ offense needs to put together some drives to give its defense a breather. Otherwise it could be a long night for those Rock Hill stoppers given the success York has had moving the football this season (360 yards of offense per game), especially on the ground.

Fort Mill (4-1) at No. 4 Northwestern (4-1)

Last week: Fort Mill beat West Florence 35-14; Northwestern beat South Pointe 35-34 in overtime

Last meeting: Northwestern won 35-28 (2014)

Key players: FMHS - Sr. OL/DL Austin Randolph, Sr. QB Rogan Wells, Jr. ATH Ronnie Hughes, Sr. DE Lavardis Pinckney. NHS - Sr. WR Julian Shockley, Sr. DT Jamah Mitchell, Jr. QB Gage Moloney, Fr. WR Jamario Holley.

Need to know: These two teams produced a classic last year, Fort Mill losing late after an agonizing fumble at the 1-yard line. This year, Fort Mill should be able to slow down Northwestern’s voracious pass rush with its misdirection, QB option offense that has produced at least 400 total yards in four of the first five contests. The question is whether the Yellow Jackets will be able to slow down Northwestern’s offense, which has really clicked with Gage Moloney at the helm. The Trojans have averaged 48 points per game during their four straight wins.

Nation Ford (3-2) at Gaffney (2-3)

Last week: Nation Ford beat Ridge View 41-36; Gaffney lost to Byrnes 28-14

Last meeting: Gaffney won 59-21 (2014)

Key players: NFHS - Jr. LB Corbin Tesimale, Sr. QB Cole Martin, Jr. WR Alex Stennett, Sr. OL Chandler Smith, Sr. DB Greg Wilson. GHS - Sr. RB Ikeem Posey, Jr. QB Bryson Ward, Sr. DE Jontez Littlejohn.

Need to know: Nation Ford has yet to beat Gaffney in three meetings, but Friday may be the Falcons’ best shot. Gaffney is allowing 260-yards-plus per game to opposing passing attacks, and has struggled mightily to generate its own offense through the air. If the Falcons’ revamped defense can get a few stops and make the host Indians play from behind, Michael Allen’s bunch - averaging over 46 points per game in its three straight wins - could be in business.

Lewisville (1-4) at No. 9 Lancaster (4-0)

Last week: Lewisville beat North Central 12-8; Lancaster beat Camden 21-7

Last meeting: Lancaster won 55-8 (2014)

Key players: Lewisville- Soph. DL Josh Belk, Sr. RB D.J. Robinson, Jr. QB Trey Keels, Jr. DE Najaylin Sanders. Lancaster- Jr. LB Desmond Ricks; Sr. OL Caleb Funderburk, Sr. QB Darius Robinson, Sr. TE James Killian, Jr. WR Cordarius Tinsley.

Need to know: Last year’s meeting was the first ever between these two teams separated by just 15 miles. This year’s will probably be the last. The size difference between Lancaster and Lewisville is just too great. The Bruins enjoy the luxury of having a thousand more students at their school, a fact that tells in games like these.

Indian Land (4-0) at Chesterfield (4-1)

Last week: Indian Land beat Cheraw 26-21; Chesterfield beat Central 36-0

Last meeting: Indian Land won 10-7 (2014)

Key players: ILHS - Sr. ATH Chris Blakeney, Soph. QB David Loughry, Sr. DL/FB Austin Gordon, Sr. OL Jacob Williams; CHS - Sr. ATH Danzel Rivers, Sr. WR Makhal Gaston, Jr. LB Dustin Rayfield.

Need to know: Indian Land has the blueprint for beating Chesterfield: do exactly what they did last year. The Warriors were able to bleed the clock, controlling the ball for much of the fourth quarter before scoring late for the win. But in last week’s win over Cheraw, Indian Land showed opportunism as well. They only had 187 yards of total offense but took advantage of turnover-caused short fields for touchdowns and a 75-yard kickoff return to the 1-yard line, converted into six more points a play later. Michael Mayer’s team will need that kind of performance to get to 5-0.

Wagener-Salley (1-3) at Great Falls (0-4)

Last week: Wagener-Salley lost to Whitmire 30-8; Great Falls was idle

Last meeting: Great Falls won 35-6 (2014)

Key players: WSHS - Sr. OL/DL Braxton Lewis, Sr. TE Dacquan Lewis. GFHS - Sr. Dee Perry, Sr. QB Pierce Funderburk, TE Raheem Bowers.

Need to know: Wagener-Salley has lost three on the trot, while Great Falls has yet to win in four games. Expect a lot of running in this game, with Wagener-Salley running the flexbone, Georgia Tech-style offense under first-year coach Willie Fox. Great Fall needs to produce some big plays, either from its wing-t, double-wing-based offense, or popping big plays in the passing game. The Red Devils haven’t allowed Wagener-Salley more than eight points in the teams’ two meetings, both Great Falls wins.
