Rock Hill man, 59, dies in shooting at York Co. gun range; investigation continues
The person who died in what police said was an self-inflicted accidental shooting Thursday at a York County gun range and store has been identified as a 59-year-old Rock Hill man.
Robert Paris died at the gun range at Sportsman Inc. from a single gunshot wound, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said. The weapon used was a .45 caliber pistol, police said. It remains unclear if Paris was a customer at the range.
A pair of employees at Sportsman performed CPR on Paris at the scene before EMS arrived, a police incident report stated. Detectives interviewed several witnesses at the scene.
Both the coroner’s office and the York County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances of Paris’s death. Autopsy and toxicology results are pending, said Gast the coroner.
Late Thursday, heraldonline.com exclusively reported that York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said that Paris had died and investigators believed the shooting was accidental. There was no active shooter situation, police officials said after the incident, and no one else was injured or in danger.
At least six deputies and detectives responded to the shooting scene, along with firefighters from Newport Fire Department who assisted EMS. The range is located northwest of the city limits of Rock Hill on S.C. 274.
