A Rock Hill company will close its doors this fall. Here are the details
A Rock Hill company will close this fall, according to a state filing.
Industrial packaging company Greif filed a WARN report to notify the state Department of Employment and Workforce of its plans for the Caraustar Industrial site at 1379 McDow Dr. in Rock Hill.
WARN reports are common with large plant closings and layoffs, though they can be filed for smaller companies. They are required of some companies to give workers advance notice of significant changes.
The letter from the company to the state workforce agency states the company will “permanently cease ongoing operations” at the facility on or around Oct. 30.
“This closure is expected to be permanent and will affect all employees at this location,” the letter states.
All employees have been notified of their separation dates, the letter continues, and that those moves are permanent. Those dates will begin Sept. 3 and run through the October closure.
Typically WARN reports include the number of impacted employees. As of late Thursday morning, that information wasn’t included in the state listing. A representative with the workforce department said Thursday that work is ongoing to get more details from the company including an employee count and list of positions impacted.
Immediate attempts to reach Greif for comment were unsuccessful.
A report from South Carolina Public Radio states about 90 employees could be impacted, and the closure is part of consolidation of five Charlotte area facilities. That report also states workers could transition to other South Carolina sites within the company.
In late 2018, Greif announced it would acquire recycled paperboard and packaging company Caraustar Industries in a $1.8 billion deal. Georgia-based Caraustar had more than 80 facilities across the country at the time.
The July 5 letter from Greif is the fifth Rock Hill area WARN report filed this year. Three of them, all the York County listings prior to the Greif one, involve a single employee. The other and largest closure was a Footprint South Carolina filing from January that involved 168 employees at a plant closure in Chester County.
