Rock Hill police officer shoots, kills dog after being bitten, department says

A Rock Hill police officer shot and killed a dog after the dog attacked and bit the officer, officials said.

The incident happened late Saturday night around 10 p.m. inside a home on Stanley Drive, according to a Rock Hill Police Department incident report.

The officer was hurt after suffering bite wounds to his arm, Rock Hill police Lt. Michael Chavis said.

“The incident happened very quickly and the officer had no alternative but to protect himself,” Chavis said.

The officer was at the house for a reported 911 hangup call when the animal attacked the officer, the incident report stated. The dog, described in the report as large, charged the officer, bit him on the arm, and would not let go, the report said. The officer tried to back out of the room but could not free himself of the dog, the report stated.

The officer shot the dog multiple times, according to the report.

No charges were filed against the owner of the animal, Chavis said. The officer is not facing any disciplinary measures for the incident, Chavis said.
