Driver killed on New Year’s Day in I-77 crash in Chester County, troopers say

One person was killed on New Year’s Day in a crash on Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.

The wreck happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near mile marker 53, said Master Trooper David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of a 1995 Ford Escort was heading north on the interstate when the vehicle went left off the northbound lanes through the median, Jones said. The vehicle then passed over the southbound lanes and struck an embankment, Jones said.

The driver died at the scene, Jones said.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt, Jones said.

There were no passengers in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, officials said.

The name of the person who died has not yet been released by the Chester County Coroner.
