Fire at Rock Hill apartment complex displaces 38, damages eight units, officials say

A massive fire at a Rock Hill apartment complex Wednesday night has left dozens of people displaced, officials said.

No injuries were reported, but eight apartment units are damaged or destroyed, officials said.

The fire was reported after 6 p.m. at the Paces River Apartments off Celanese Road near the Catawba River, said Mark Simmons, deputy chief of the Rock Hill Fire Department.

The fire had broken through the roof of two upstairs units when firefighters arrived, Simmons said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to those units, but six other apartments sustained heavy water damage during the firefighting, Simmons said.

At least 38 people are affected, Simmons said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Officials from the South Carolina’s Upstate chapter of the American Red Cross were on scene assisting victims with vouchers for emergency housing, clothing, food and other needs, officials said.
