1 killed, 1 hurt in head-on crash in Chester County near Catawba River, officials say
One man was killed and another was hurt Friday morning in a head-on crash in Chester County, according to police, fire, and coroner officials.
The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. north of Fort Lawn on U.S. 21 near Fincher Road, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol. A 2016 Nissan sedan that was on U.S. 21 went left of center and struck a 2009 Ford pickup truck head-on, Miller said.
The driver of the sedan died at the scene, Miller said.
The driver of the pickup truck was injured, Miller said.
The identity of the man who died at the scene on U.S. 21 between Fort Lawn and the York County line has not been released, said Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.
The other driver who was injured in the wreck was taken to Piedmont Medical Center hospital in Rock Hill, Tinker said.
Fort Lawn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, and other emergency officials, responded to the crash scene near the Catawba River, said Allen Culp, chief of the Fort Lawn fire and rescue department.
The road was blocked for about two hours as crews worked the scene, officials said.
The collision remains under investigation by both the coroner’s office and the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
