Official: York County man, 24, dead after I-77 head-on crash across median in Chester

One person was killed and another was injured Tuesday in a head-on crash on I-77 in Chester County, according to troopers and coroner officials.

The Chester County Coroner’s Office identified the driver who died as Aleksander Mark Doughty, 24, of York County.

The wreck happened around 10:15 a.m. near mile marker 54 south of Richburg, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A Ford sedan heading south struck a truck in the rear, Miller said. The Ford sedan then went across the highway median where it hit a northbound tractor-truck head-on, Miller said.

Doughty, the driver of the Ford sedan, was airlifted by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died, said Miller and coroner officials.

The driver of the car that was struck in the rear in the southbound lane was not hurt, Miller said.

The driver of the tractor-truck was injured and transported by EMS to Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Lancaster, Miller said. The truck driver’s condition has not been released.

The collision remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.

The fatal crash is the third fatal collision in a week in Chester County.
