1 dead, 1 hurt, in 3-vehicle crash on I-77 in Chester County, troopers say

One person was killed and another hurt Thursday night in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 in Chester County, troopers said.

The name of the person who was killed in the wreck has not been released by the Chester County Coroner’s Office.

The collision happened around 9 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-77 near mile marker 48, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

A tractor-trailer driven by a Florida man was disabled in the left-hand lane of the highway when it was struck by a van heading southbound, Miller said.

The van then struck a Kia sedan that was traveling south on the interstate, Miller said.

The driver of the van died at the scene, Miller said.

The driver of the sedan was injured and taken to a Columbia hospital, Miller said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt, Miller said.

Chester County EMS, volunteer fire departments from Chester County, and the S.C. Department of Public Safety responded to the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by the public safety department Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
