Trooper: Driver killed in Chester County crash; 5th fatal in SC county in two weeks

A driver was killed in Chester County on Thursday after his pickup truck overturned in a crash near Great Falls, troopers said.

The wreck happened before 4 p.m. on S.C. 97 in southern Chester County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The 2007 Chevy Silverado truck went off the left side of the highway, struck a sign, then went down an embankment, Miller said.

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck, Miller said. The driver died at the scene.

Chester County Deputy Coroner Tommy Williams said the driver was a male, but officials have not yet identified the person who was killed.

The collision remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.

The fatal wreck is the fifth in Chester County in two weeks, according to coroner and police officials. Thursday’s crash marks the ninth fatal wreck in Chester County in 2020, according to public safety statistics.
