2 workers at Fort Mill post office test positive for coronavirus, officials say

Two workers at the Fort Mill post office have tested positive for coronavirus, federal postal officials said.

The employees work at the Tom Hall street facility, near downtown Fort Mill in York County, officials said.

Philip Bogenberger, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Service Mid-Carolinas District, said both employees tested positive. Details about the employees’ conditions were not released.

“We believe the risk is low for employees who work at the facility, but we will keep our employees apprised as new information and guidance becomes available,” a USPS statement said.

There has been no disruption to mail delivery or retail services, the statement said.

“Although the virus can survive for a short period of time on some surfaces, both the CDC and the United States Surgeon General have indicated that it is unlikely to be spread from domestic or international mail, products or packaging,” the statement said.

The postal service follows federal safety practices, Bogenberger said.

Coronavirus cases in York County continue to spike. Over the weekend, 158 new cases were reported, marking the county’s highest increase in daily cases reported to date during the pandemic. The previous high was 104 on July 3. As of Tuesday, the county had a total of 2,506 cases, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Several other businesses in York County have reported workers testing positive for coronavirus, including York’s MacLean Power Systems manufacturing site, Food Lion stores, Lowe’s Home Improvement in York, and Shutterfly in Fort Mill.
