This Charlotte food, drink and convenience spot is expanding to downtown Rock Hill.
Common Market will open a new location in Rock Hill.
Common Market has been in the Charlotte market for 18 years. The brand bills itself as a community driven general store with deli and beer selections.
“Rock Hill has always been an intriguing location for our company and we feel the community will be a great fit for what we offer,” lead partner Graham Worth said in an announcement Tuesday morning. “We are very excited to enter into a new territory and listen to and embrace what the people of Rock Hill want from their Common Market.”
The new location is 161 W. Main St. It’s a former car dealership and event rental business. It’s across from major redevelopment projects including the former Herald building, which will become senior living. That site also is part of the 400,000-square-foot Thread project, which will redevelop an historic warehouse from the former Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company complex into restaurant, retail, office and event space.
Those projects are part of a wave of of downtown redevelopment that also includes hotels, redeveloped mill sites and the new Rock Hill Sports & Event Center. As of last fall there was half a billion dollars in announced or ongoing development downtown.
“Common Market’s expansion to Rock Hill will bring unique infill development to the Knowledge Park area, drawing not only Rock Hill residents but visitors as well,” Mayor John Gettys said in the annoucement. “This is yet another example of the successful outcomes we’re seeing from the investments made in Knowledge Park.”
County records show the Common Market property sold May 19. A third of the 15,000-square-foot building will be Common Market, with the rest converted for office space. The property is a little more than an acre.
“We were presented with the perfect opportunity to lead our own development and continue the momentum in Rock Hill market,” Worth said. “We strive to allow each location to evolve and reflect the community it serves and we are excited to see this take place in Rock Hill. This is a big investment for a small business but we feel confident that this Rock Hill location will be well served for many years and will become a blueprint for future development of Common Markets.”
Renovation starts this fall with an anticipated summer 2021 opening.
