York County sheriff’s deputies get a 5% raise next week. Here’s how it stacks up
York County Sheriff’s Office deputies will receive a pay raise next week.
The county council voted unanimously on Monday for a 5% pay increase to stay competitive with neighboring communities. The raise applies to all sworn staff, including enforcement deputies and detention officers.
“It’s something that necessarily has to be done. It’s being done within the budget constraints that exist, and it’s gonna help to attract the necessary personnel and to retain the folks that are in that department,” said council Chairwoman Christi Cox.
Starting salary for deputies was $51,027 before the raise. A 5% increase would bring it to $53,578. Here’s how that stacks up to nearby jurisdictions, according to figures presented by York County:
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police: $58,623-$64,485 (depending on education level)
- Lancaster County: $56,925
- South Carolina Highway Patrol: $56,237
- Cleveland County: $54,768
- Rock Hill: $53,000
- Chester County: $52,641
- Fort Mill: $52,607
- Tega Cay: $52,000
- Greenville: $48,526
- Spartanburg: $48,487
Detention officer starting salary is currently at $46,283. A 5% raise would bring that to $48,597, making it one of the better paying options in the area:
- Lancaster County: $53,648
- Cleveland County: $48,255
- Chester County: $47,940
- Greenville: $47,495
- Spartanburg: $46,283
- Rock Hill: $45,000
“We are the premier law enforcement agency in this area, and our salaries should reflect that,” said Sheriff Tony Breeden, who requested the raises.
