Rock Hill patrol vehicle involved in crash at site of earlier, unrelated wreck

A Rock Hill police officer was hurt Friday when his vehicle was involved in a York County crash at the same location as an earlier unrelated wreck, officials said.

The police-involved crash happened Friday morning on U.S. 21, also called Anderson Road, near the intersection of Tech Park Drive at the entrance to York Technical College, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.

The earlier wreck happened in the same location at 6:50 a.m, police said. Rock Hill police had cleared the scene of that earlier collision when the second crash happened, Chavis said.

Because the police department was involved in the second crash, Rock Hill officials called the S.C. Highway Patrol to investigate, Chavis said.

The police-involved crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. Friday., said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the highway patrol.

The driver of the civilian vehicle struck the police vehicle in the rear while the police vehicle was stopped at a red light, Miller said. The driver of the civilian vehicle was cited for too fast for conditions, Miller said.

The police officer was taken by EMS to a medical facility to be treated, Miller said.

The extent of the police officer’s injuries were not released by the highway patrol.
