The driver of a car was killed late Wednesday in a head-on collision with a dump truck in Chester County, officials said.

The crash happened on U.S. 21 near McFadden Road around 5:30 p.m., said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The area is close to the Catawba River near the town of Fort Lawn, south of the York County line.

The driver was in a 2005 Ford sedan that was traveling south on U.S. 21 when it collided with the northbound dump truck, Miller said.

The driver of the dump truck was a 26-year-old man from Rock Hill, Miller said. The dump truck driver was hurt and taken to Medical University of South Carolina-Lancaster, Miller said. The identity and condition of the driver was unavailable.

The driver who was killed was identified Thursday as Darrell Linn Pigg, 48, of Lancaster, said Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.

Pigg had been a longtime firefighter and training officer at Gooches Fire Department, according to Lancaster County fire officials and an obituary at Lancaster Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

The funeral is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at High Point Free Will Baptist Church in Lancaster.

The wreck remains under investigation by the highway patrol, coroner’s office, and the S.C. Department of Public Safety Multi-Agency Accident Investigation Team (MAIT.)

The fatality is the 13th on Chester County roads in 2021, according to public safety department statistics.
