Police: Driver killed in York County crash stole car from store minutes before
The driver of a vehicle who was killed Friday afternoon in a York County crash had stolen the car from a nearby store before the wreck, police said.
The York County Coroner’s Office has not released the driver’s name.
York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said Saturday that the driver who was killed had stolen the car from a nearby Dollar General store parking lot at the intersection of Shiloh Road and S.C. 161 minutes before the fatal collision.
The incident on S.C. 161, just outside the York city limits, is under investigation by the York County Sheriff’s Office, coroner’s office and S.C. Highway Patrol, officials said.
The crash was reported around 4:40 p.m., said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the highway patrol. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, Miller said.
The car, a 2015 Chrysler sedan, was traveling west on S.C. 161 when it ran off the road, Miller said. The car hit a fence and tree before it overturned, Miller said.
The coroner’s office, York Fire Department, EMS, and sheriff’s office also responded to the crash, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the sheriff’s office. A person at the store called police to report the car being stolen at around the same time the crash was reported down the street from the store, Faris said.
