Suspect caught in Florida, now in York County to face charges in Charlotte man’s death

A Florida man caught in Miami in connection with the fatal shooting of a Charlotte man has been extradited to South Carolina on murder and other charges.

Corey Jermaine Troupe, 49, was brought back from Florida over the July 4 holiday weekend, according to court records and Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Troupe is charged with murder, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in the April death of Tony J. Stephens. Stephens, 34, of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, was found shot to death in rural York County on Quaint Road near the intersection of Hall Spencer Road.

Deputies have not released a motive for the crimes or the relationship between Troupe and Stephens.

The shooting sparked a multi-state search that spanned South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, officials said.

Troupe was arrested days after the killing by Miami-Dade police and federal agents. He had been in the Dade County jail since his arrest.

A conviction for murder in South Carolina carries a sentence of 30 years to life in prison. The robbery charge carries up to 30 years in prison and the weapon charge carries five years.

Troupe remains in the York County jail without bond after bail was denied in a court hearing.
