1 dead in Lancaster County, SC shootout near NC state line. Here are the details

A shootout between two people at a Lancaster County home near the North Carolina state line has left one man dead, officials said.

The shooting happened after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on Deason Lane in the Buford community, south of the North Carolina border. As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed.

The person who was killed was identified late Tuesday as Kristopher Scott Rumsey of Lancaster, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said.

Deputies responded after reports of gunfire came from the area, said Doug Barfield, spokesman for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office

In woods near the home, deputies found a man, 38, who had been shot, Barfield said. Lancaster County EMS responded but the man died at the scene.

“It appears there were two people who were firing guns,” Barfield said. “We are still talking to people who were at the scene to determine what happened.”

It remains unclear if anyone will face criminal charges in the shooting.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office and Lancaster County Violent Crime Task Force interviewed people at the scene and at the sheriff’s office in Lancaster, Barfield said. The task force includes deputies, Lancaster Police Department officers, and prosecutors from the 6th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing, Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said.
