Rock Hill police are looking for a gray, midsized SUV after a shooting near Winthrop University Sunday afternoon.

An 18-year-old man was on life support at a hospital after being shot in the head outside a Rock Hill McDonald’s near Winthrop University Sunday afternoon, police said.

The male victim was talking to people inside an SUV around 6:30 p.m. when he was shot, Rock Hill Police Department Lt. Michael Chavis said. One of the people inside the SUV shot the victim, a police statement said.

The victim taken to Piedmont Medical Center has not been identified. The vehicle, believed to be a gray midsized SUV, fled after the shooting, police said in the statement.

On Monday, police charged a Chester man with accessory after the fact in connection to the shooting. Chester County deputies arrested Jameson Larone Dunham, 20, before Durham was taken to the Rock Hill jail, police said.

It is unclear what role Dunham allegedly had in the incident. Police have not released details about a possible motive for the crime.

The shooting happened across Cherry Road from the Winthrop campus, south of Oakland Avenue. Classes for the fall semester started at the college last week.

There’s no known connection from the shooting to the school, Winthrop Police Department Chief Charles Yearta said Monday morning. Winthrop sent out a notification to students and staff Sunday advising them about the violent crime near campus, Yearta said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
