A teen drove for DoorDash in Rock Hill to earn money. He was killed in crossfire
A South Carolina teen shot to death in late June while driving after delivering DoorDash was not the intended target of the shooter firing in a brawl on a Rock Hill street, police said.
Police arrested Zykemian Havar Williams, 21, Thursday in the June 27 death of ZyDerec Massey, 17, on Finley Road.
Massey was driving west of downtown Rock Hill around 10 p.m. June 27 when a bullet went through the windshield and hit him in the neck, Rock Hill Police Department Detective Tayler Englert said in Rock Hill Municipal Court Friday morning.
Police found video and other evidence that showed a fight in the roadway between groups of people on Finley Road, Englert said. The combatants in the fight were from York and Chester counties.
The video showed men and women fighting when several shots could be heard in the background, Englert said.
“Detectives do not believe the victim was the intended target,” Englert said.
The car went off the road and hit a bush. Massey died later at a hospital.
Details on accused shooter
Court statements and arrests warrants show Williams also had more than 70 grams of marijuana and $1,300 in cash in his bedroom when arrested Thursday in the killing.
Williams faces murder, possession of a weapon, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute charges. He did not speak in court other than to say he would hire a private defense attorney to represent him. Murder carries 30 years to life in prison for a conviction.
Officials have not said who was targeted in the shooting, but officers found at least five bullet casings at the crime scene, Englert said.
Victim’s family in court
Massey’s mother and several other family members were in court but did not address the judge after police said how he died while trying to earn money during the summer. Several wore t-shirts with his picture and name on it.
Police officials said in court how “the family is broken” by the killing.
A judge denied Williams bail. He will be sent to the York County jail pending trial.
Others accused of cover-up
Police have charged three other people with accessory to murder after the fact, alleging they concealed evidence and drove Williams away from the shootout, according to police and court records.
Police charged Jo’el Kamon Strait, 21, of York, on charges of assisting in hiding the gun used in the shooting, according to police statements in court Friday and an arrest warrant obtained by The Herald.
Jazmin Deann Unique Foster, 18, of Edgemoor, was accused of driving Williams away from the crime scene, then assisting in “cleaning” the getaway car, warrants show.
Jaia Jahne Miller, 18, of Rock Hill, is accused of storing the weapon at her residence afterward, according to an arrest warrant.
All three suspects accused of roles in the cover-up remain jailed under $500,000 bail, records show.
2 Rock Hill teens killed in 10 days
The arrest of Williams in Massey’s June 27 death came a day after Rock Hill police charged two teens with the killing of a 19-year-old outside a convenience store that happened Monday night.
In that case, police say store surveillance video showed the two suspects shooting outside the store. The 19-year-old victim died at the scene.
Police have said the cases do not appear to be connected.
