Why you will see more cops on York County’s busiest roads this week

S.C. Highway Patrol.

More police officers will be patrolling major York County roads the next three days as law enforcement officials hope to cut down on traffic collisions and fatalities.

Extra troopers will be assigned to York County Tuesday through Thursday targeting speeding and DUI along with other violations and unsafe driving behaviors, S.C. Highway Patrol Capt. Scott Darby said.

More patrols will cover most of the major highways. Included are U.S. 21, S.C. 72, S.C. 274, S.C. 55, S.C. 557, S.C. 49, S.C. 161, and Porter Road that runs near Interstate 77, Darby said.

While the highway patrol has primary enforcement on York County roads outside of municipalities, York County Sheriff Tony Breeden said deputies will be assisting troopers as part of the push for safer roads.

“One of the number one complaints we get is about traffic,” Breeden said.

Fatal crashes in York County are up in 2025 over this time last year, Darby said.

The increased presence will include police from municipalities around the county and the highway patrol’s motorcycle unit.
