Fort Mill man faces reckless homicide charge after woman dies in Rock Hill crash

A Fort Mill man has been arrested on a charge of reckless homicide after a fatal crash Friday afternoon near one of York County’s busiest intersections left a Lancaster County woman dead, police said.

The collision happened before 3:30 p.m on Celanese Road near Interstate 77 Exit 82 in Rock Hill, according to a Rock Hill Police Department statement.

Marybeth Robinson, 43, of Indian Land, died at Piedmont Medical Center after the crash, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said.

Joel Laron Smith, 21, faces charges of reckless homicide and operating an uninsured vehicle, according to police and jail records.

Smith’s Hyundai sedan went airborne and crossed the Celanese Road median after exiting southbound I-77 “at a high rate of speed,” police said in the statement. His car hit a Ford Ranger pickup truck before striking a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Robinson, according to police.

A judge denied Smith bail in a first court appearance, and he remained in the York County jail Monday, records show.
