Police investigate fatal shooting of 16-year-old in small city outside Rock Hill
South Carolina state police have taken over the investigation after a 16-year-old boy died, and another person was wounded after a shooting in Chester, officials said.
Avery O’Brien West died at the scene after being shot Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. on Pinckney Street, according to Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.
A second person whose age and identity has not been released was wounded in the gunfire, the Chester Police Department said in a statement put out to the public and news organizations on social media.
Chester is a small city of around 5,000 people south of Rock Hill. It has a police department, but the city requested the State Law Enforcement Division take over the homicide investigation, according to a SLED statement sent to The Herald. A SLED spokesperson said the probe remains ongoing, but no arrests have been made.
Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey told The Herald that deputies assisted at the scene.
The homicide is the second in two days in the Rock Hill region. A man was killed in York late Friday in a shooting where a suspect was arrested the next day.
