Construction to start soon on Rock Hill’s Legion Collegiate Academy. Here’s where.

Legion Collegiate Academy is one step closer to opening a permanent location.

Legion Collegiate is a charter school in Rock Hill that focuses on athletics and academics. Students earn college credit while in high school. The school serves grades 9-12.

Legion leaders have closed on a $13.9 million construction bond, allowing work to begin on the permanent school in January, a release from the school states.

Legion owns an 83-acre site off Highway 901 and Long Meadow Road in Rock Hill, the release states. The school’s address will be 3090 Long Meadow Road. The site is located near exit 73 off I-77.

Construction should take eight to 10 months, according to the release. T.K. Kennedy, the school’s principal, said Legion should move to its permanent location in the fall of 2020.

Legion opened a temporary location earlier this year at Trinity Bible Church off University Drive in Rock Hill.

“We are excited that this permanent location will soon be open and it will allow us to better execute our mission,” Kennedy said in a news statement.

The school is managed by the Pinnacle Charter School Management Group, an education management organization.

“While the process to build the permanent Legion Collegiate high school has taken longer than expected, we are extremely excited about moving into this new facility,” Mike D’Angelo, president of Pinnacle Charter Academies, said in the statement.

The facility will house a 1,500 state gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, the release states. The Herald previously reported that the school plans to join the South Carolina High School League.

The school will serve up to 600 students in the 47,000 square foot one-story facility, the release states. At any one time, about 300 students will be on campus.

Legion Collegiate Academy students attend either a morning or afternoon session focused on traditional high school subjects and college-level classes, The Herald previously reported. The students also take two online elective courses. In the afternoon, student-athletes receive sports training.

Former South Pointe football coach Strait Herron is the school’s first athletic director and head football coach. Bobby Carroll was named Legion’s defensive coordinator and assistant athletic director.
