Man duct tapes Apple AirTag to ex-girlfriend’s car to track her, Pennsylvania cops say
A Pennsylvania man duct-taped an apple AirTag to his ex-girlfriend’s car without her knowledge to track her location, state troopers said.
The 33-year-old man from Indiana, Pennsylvania, was arrested Jan. 30 on charges including criminal use of a communication facility, stalking and harassment, according to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police.
McClatchy News is not naming the man to protect the identity of the woman involved.
The 32-year-old woman told authorities when she got in her car, she was alerted that an Apple AirTag was trying to connect to her iPhone, troopers said.
The woman and her father searched but could not find the tracking device.
When troopers searched her vehicle, they found the AirTag duct-taped to the rear passenger-side wheel well, authorities said.
The woman told police she didn’t know who would have placed the device. Authorities used data from the tracker and identified the woman’s ex-boyfriend as the owner, troopers said.
An interview with the man revealed he put the tracker on her vehicle two days before she found it, troopers said.
He was booked into the Indiana County Jail and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 11, authorities said.
Indiana is about a 60-mile drive east from Pittsburgh.
