Tuesday’s special election will fill out York County Council with a new Rock Hill rep
A special election is going on today to fill the final York County Council seat.
Challengers Watts Huckabee and Ryan Stephens vie for the seat vacated with the election of former Dist. 6 council member to the South Carolina legislature. The vote Tuesday will give York County Council its seventh member.
Huckabee is a Republican, Stephens a Democrat. Both live in Rock Hill.
District 6 in York County changed last year, as did all seven council districts, when the map was redrawn following the 2020 Census. The current District 6 runs from Adnah Church Road and Hands Mill Highway east to the Catawba River, and from Lake Wylie north of Mt. Gallant Road on the north end to York Highway, Main Street, Herlong Avenue, Cherry Road and Cel-River Road on the south side.
It’s one of the geographically smaller districts in the county but includes much of the high-population Rock Hill area. Maps were redrawn to distribute population almost evenly among the seven districts.
The winner from Tuesday’s election will fill out the remainder of the term Guffey won in 2020. The seat comes up for election again in 2024.
