One person killed, another injured when pickup truck crashes, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed and another was hospitalized Wednesday after a pickup truck crashed into multiple objects, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision was discovered at about 6:45 a.m. in Laurens County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

A 2006 Dodge pickup was driving west on S.C. 14 when it crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, according to Bolt. The pickup hit a guard rail then crashed into a tree, killing the driver, Bolt said.

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office said that 22-year-old Laurens resident Vanessa Nava was the driver who died, WHNS reported.

A passenger in the pickup, a 23-year-old man, was hurt and had to be airlifted by helicopter to a hospital, according to Bolt. Further information on his condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

The coroner’s office said the collision happened at about 2 a.m., but was not discovered until hours later when it was light outside and another driver passing the scene saw the crashed pickup, WYFF reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 280 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least five people have died in Laurens County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 24 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
