Driver killed in head-on collision on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says
One person was killed Saturday in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:30 a.m. in Darlington County, Lance Cpl. Lena Butler said.
A 2014 Mercedes-Benz was driving south on Secondary 49, and near Rogers Road when the vehicle veered left of center and hit an oncoming 2004 Nissan Sentra, according to Butler.
The Nissan driver was taken to an area hospital and died there, Butler said.
The Darlington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Nissan driver.
Butler said the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seat belts.
Information about what caused the Mercedes-Benz to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through April 23, at least 280 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,091 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least eight people have died in Darlington County crashes in 2023, according to DPS data. Last year, 18 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
