Gunman arrested after person was shot near USC campus in Columbia, police say
One person was injured late Sunday night in a shooting that happened near the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia, police said.
The victim was shot in the lower body and suffered a non-life-threatening injury, a Columbia Police Department official told The State on Monday. Further information on the victim’s condition was not available.
At about 5:30 p.m. Monday, 27-year-old Daniel A. Wise was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police said.
It was just before 11 p.m. Sunday, that USC issued a Carolina Alert notifying the public that a shooting had occurred at 1717 Washington Street. That’s in Columbia, in the area between Hampton and Gervais streets.
Information about a motive for the shooting was not available, but Columbia police said Wise and the victim were acquaintances who had been arguing. There was no word about why they were arguing.
The shooting was called an isolated incident by Columbia police, who are leading the investigation.
Despite the proximity of the shooting to the USC campus, a university official told The State that no students were involved.
Information about where Wise was taken into custody was not available, but he’s being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set, according to jail records.
