SC man tried to escape law enforcement but was killed in crash, cops say
A Lowcountry man who was leading law enforcement officers on a chase was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed over the weekend, according to South Carolina officials.
Andre Myers, a 22-year-old Huger resident, is the driver who died in Saturday’s wreck, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office said.
At about 12:45 a.m., Myers was trying to escape from law enforcement as he drove a 2005 Honda Accord on Clements Ferry Road in Charleston, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Near the intersection with Cainhoy Village Road, the Honda ran off Clements Ferry Road and hit a utility pole then crashed into a tree, according to Bolt.
Berkeley County EMS took Myers to an area hospital where he died from injuries he suffered in the wreck at 1:47 a.m., the coroner’s office said.
Information about why law enforcement was chasing Myers was not available.
Bolt said Myers was the only person in the Honda, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Myers was wearing a seat belt.
While the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into what prompted the chase, both the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office are investigating what caused the Honda to veer off the road and the deadly collision.
Through Aug. 24, at least 537 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 25 people have died in Berkeley County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 32 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
