36-year-old SC man killed in crash where another driver was hurt, coroner says
One person was killed and another was injured late Saturday night in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Steven Chase Liebler, a 36-year-old Lexington resident, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 11 p.m. in Lexington County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the Highway Patrol.
A 2016 Infiniti SUV was driving west on Old Cherokee Road, according to Bolt. Near the intersection with Foxglen Road, in a part of Lexington close to Lake Murray, the Infiniti collided with a 2020 Ford SUV, Bolt said.
Liebler was driving the Ford east on Old Cherokee Road when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a mailbox before swerving back onto the road and across the center line where the head-on wreck occurred, according to Bolt.
Liebler, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, Fisher said.
The Infiniti driver was taken by EMS to an area hospital, Bolt said. Further information on the Infiniti driver’s condition was not available, but Fisher said the surviving driver suffered minor injuries.
Bolt said the drivers were the only people in the SUVs, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the Infiniti driver was wearing a seat belt.
Information about why the Ford originally veered off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Aug. 31, at least 577 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 25 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 50 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
