Two vehicles run over person near shopping center in Columbia, SC cops say
A person walking on a popular Columbia road was hit by two vehicles Saturday and died, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The deadly collisions happened in Richland County at about 5:40 p.m., said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.
A pedestrian was walking on Two Notch Road near the Village at Sandhill shopping center, according to Ridgeway. In addition to the mall, that area is densely packed with retail businesses and restaurants.
Near the intersection with Fashion Drive the pedestrian was hit by 2022 Toyota SUV, then struck again by 2024 Dodge pickup truck, Ridgeway said. Both vehicles were driving north on Two Notch Road when they ran over the pedestrian, according to Ridgeway.
The pedestrian died at the scene, Ridgeway said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian. On Monday, the coroner’s asked the public for help identifying the victim, who it described as a Hispanic man in his 30s to 40s, with distinct tattoos.
“We are asking anyone who may recognize this individual or have information that could assist in confirming his identity to please contact our office,” the coroner’s office said in a news release.
Anyone with information is asked to call the coroner’s office at 803-576-1793.
Ridgeway said that neither the SUV driver nor the pickup driver were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused both of the vehicles to hit the pedestrian, and if darkness played a factor as sunset was listed at 5:14 p.m., was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Nov. 30, at least 808 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
