Tropical Storm Debby is disrupting all sorts of things across South Carolina this week — including college football practice.
At least two teams from the Palmetto State have altered practice plans to sidestep the nasty weather and still get in their preparations for the 2024 seasons.
Coastal Carolina’s football team headed north from the Myrtle Beach area to Raleigh, North Carolina to practice for a few days in the indoor complex at N.C. State. That’s where Chanticleers head coach Tim Beck spent time as the Wolfpack’s offensive coordinator.
Meanwhile, S.C. State practiced Tuesday at the University of South Carolina’s indoor facility, a Bulldogs team spokesman confirmed.
USC gave S.C. State from 12:30 to 3 p.m. daily to use the facility as needed this week, first-year head coach Chennis Berry told Phil Kornblut in a radio interview. The Bulldogs’ campus in Orangeburg is about 45 minutes from Columbia.
“We can’t let other people get practices in and we don’t get practices in,” Berry said. “We’ve got to get our 25 practices in somehow.”
S.C. State doesn’t have an indoor practice option, while Coastal is building a new facility that’s slated to open in spring 2025.
Charleston Southern’s football team practiced at USC’s indoor facility in September 2019 because of the threat of a hurricane.
The rain and impacts from Tropical Storm Debby are forecast to affect the state through Friday, according to the latest forecasts.
Most colleges’ first games are about three weeks away.
Coastal opens up on Aug. 29 with a road game at Jacksonville State. S.C. State plays at Florida A&M on Aug. 31 to begin its season.
