York’s Madi Quinn is The Herald’s girls’ spring sports athlete of the week (March 16)
Editor’s note: The South Carolina High School League ruled Monday that the spring sports season will be suspended until April 5. SCHSL executive members will reconvene and reassess circumstances on April 2. That said, The Herald is still following through with this week’s polls in order to give the athletes who competed in last week’s slate of contests their due and deserved recognition.

Madi Quinn of the York Comprehensive High School softball team is The Herald’s latest girls’ spring sports athlete of the week.
Quinn, a sophomore, tossed a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and only allowed one walk in a 7-2 win at South Pointe on March 11.
Over 3,000 votes were cast in this week’s poll. Quinn obtained 26.4 percent of the vote, edging out Audrey Wilson, who captured 23.4 percent of the vote.

Athlete of the week finalists
Burns Brazzell, Northwestern soccer: The Northwestern sophomore midfielder scored two goals as the Trojans won, 3-0, picking up their first victory of the season on March 10.
Northwestern is 1-0-2 this season.
Sydney Johnson, Nation Ford softball: The Nation Ford sophomore was 14-for-17 at the plate in five games in the Byrnes Invitational last weekend.
Johnson was a perfect 4-for-4 in a 20-4 win over Greer on March 14.
Johson is batting .690 for Nation Ford (2-5) this season.
Zoe Kennedy, South Pointe soccer: The South Pointe senior had a goal in the Stallions’ 2-0 win over York, Sept. 12.
Kennedy has six goals for South Pointe (2-1) this season.
Calista Laird, Clover lacrosse: The Clover senior attacker had five goals and six assists in three Blue Eagle victories this week.
Laird started the week with two goals and two assists in a 14-8 win over Providence on March 9.
Two days later, she had a goal and two assists in a 9-3 win over Boiling Springs.
Laird finished off the week with two more goals and two more assists in a 15-0 victory over Catawba Ridge on March 13.
Clover is 6-1 this season.
Katie Pou, Nation Ford track: The Nation Ford junior showed her versatility, winning the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs at a home meet on March 10.
Pou ran a 2:23.29 to win the 800 (which is the third-best in the state this outdoor season), a 5:17.48 to win the 1600 (also third in the state this outdoor season) and 11:37.33 to win the 3200 (No. 2 in the state this outdoor season).
Pou is the defending 5A cross country state champion. She won the 1600-meter 5A outdoor state in 2019 as well.

Quinn issued only one walk in the same game.
Alexa Strelick, Fort Mill lacrosse: The Fort Mill sophomore midfielder scored five goals and had four assists and nine groundballs as the Yellow Jackets split games with Charlotte Country Day and Spartanburg this week.
Strelick scored a goal, notched an assist and collected five groundballs in an 11-10 overtime loss to Country Day on Mar. 9.
Two days later, Strelick recorded four goals, three assists and four groundballs in a 16-4 victory over Spartanburg.
Strelick has 19 goals, seven assists and 20 groundballs for Fort Mill (6-1) this season.
Reese Therrell, Rock Hill softball: The Rock Hill senior had a big week at the plate, going 4-for-12 with a double and two triples, while also going 1-2 on the mound with 29 strikeouts.
Therrell was 2-for-4 with two triples, while striking out 11 batters in a 5-4 loss to Catawba Ridge on March 10.
She went 2-for-4 with a double, while striking out six batters on the mound in a 9-3 loss to Indian Land on March 12.
Therrell finished off the week with 12 strikeouts, while earning the win in a 5-2 victory over South Pointe on March 13.
Therrell is hitting .466 with three doubles, three triples, nine runs batted in, while striking 57 batters for Rock Hill (3-3) this season.
Audrey Wilson, Catawba Ridge softball: The 8th grader went 8-for-13 with five doubles, a triple and 10 RBI in three wins this week.
Wilson started her week with a bang — going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs, including the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Catawba Ridge a 5-4 win over Rock Hill on March 10.
Two days later, Wilson went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs in a 21-4 victory at Northwestern.
Wilson finished off the week by going 2-for-4 with two more doubles in a 15-0 win over Keenan on March 13.
Wilson is batting .467 with 14 RBI for Catawba Ridge (5-3) this season.
Gabriella Wilson, Legion Collegiate softball: The Legion Collegiate sophomore had a monster week at the plate, going 8-for-11 with four home runs as the Lancers collected their first three wins in school history.
Wilson smashed two home runs to go with three RBIs and a stolen base as Legion Collegiate won its first regular season game ever, 8-0, over defending 3A state champion Union County on March 11.
Wilson hit two more home runs over the weekend in Legion Collegiate wins over Travelers Rest (5-2) and Union County (4-1) in the Byrnes Invitational.
Wilson was named all-tournament team at the Byrnes Invitational, and she is batting .533 for Legion Collegiate (3-0) this season.
