Fuller Sims of Andrew Jackson is The Herald’s Football Player of the Week

Fuller Sims of the Andrew Jackson football team has been voted The Herald’s Football Player of the Week.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior linebacker had nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup and an interception return for a touchdown to lead Andrew Jackson to a 21-7 victory at Cheraw on Oct. 15. Sims — who is also the long snapper on punts for the Volunteers — has notched 63 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and two interceptions for Andrew Jackson (6-2) this season.

The Volunteers are playing for their program’s first region championship since 1982 on Friday night when they take on Chesterfield.

There were 18,159 votes cast in this week’s poll. Sims earned 39.6% of the vote; Judge Collier of Legion Collegiate earned 26.9% of the vote; and Gerrell Watkins of Northwestern earned 15.4% of the vote.

Meet the nominees for this week’s award below.

Meet this week’s finalists

Luke Bracey, Rock Hill defensive end. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound senior simply went off in Rock Hill’s win over Blythewood on Oct. 15. His defensive stats alone are ridiculous: 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two QB hurries, one fumble recovery, one forced safety, two blocked field goals (one a FG, the other an extra point) and an interception he returned for a touchdown. And on offense? Bracey as a tight end caught a 15-yard touchdown pass and blocked well, too — grading out at 90% and adding a pancake block. Rock Hill’s win moves the Bearcats to 2-4 and 1-1 in Region 4-5A.

Sheldon Crawford, Catawba Ridge defensive back. In only his second career start, the Catawba Ridge freshman had seven tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown to help the Copperheads to a 31-10 win at Lancaster on Oct. 15. Catawba Ridge is 4-4 this season.

RJ Glasgow, York running back. Glasgow notched five carries for 108 yards and a touchdown — and also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass — to help York to a 56-14 win over Fort Mill on Oct. 15. The 6-foot, 210-pound running back also had eight tackles, one interception and three pass breakups on defense. York (6-1) has won six straight games.

Fuller Sims, Andrew Jackson linebacker.

Gerrell Watkins, Northwestern receiver. The senior wide receiver had 10 catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead Northwestern to a 35-21 win at Spring Valley on Oct. 15. Northwestern (8-1) has won eight consecutive games after losing its season-opener to South Pointe — a game the Trojans didn’t have Watkins, who was out with an injury.

Judge Collier, Legion Collegiate quarterback. The junior quarterback passed for 64 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 100 yards and another score to lead Legion Collegiate to a 24-17 win over St. Joseph’s in his first career start under center on Oct. 15. Collier also had five tackles and a pass breakup from his defensive back position in the same game. Legion Collegiate is 1-4 this season.
