Ariel Bryant of Catawba Ridge volleyball is The Herald’s Athlete of the Week

Ariel Bryant of the Catawba Ridge volleyball team is The Herald’s fall sports Athlete of the Week.

Bryant had 24 kills in playoff wins over Irmo and Lugoff-Elgin last week. The Copperhead recorded 14 kills in a 3-1, second-round win over Irmo on Oct. 26. And then two days later, she had 10 kills in a 3-1 win over Lugoff-Elgin. Catawba Ridge is 23-8-2 this season and will play for an Upper State championship on Tuesday (Nov. 2).

The Copperheads saw their season end against Pickens in the Upper State championship game on Tuesday night.

There were 22,285 votes cast in this week’s poll. Bryant earned 54.2% of the vote, and Christian Notarangelo of Northwestern cross country earned 44.5% of the vote.

Meet this week’s finalists

Taylor Atkinson, Nation Ford volleyball. The Falcon senior had 26 kills, 26 digs and one ace in a season-ending loss to JL Mann in the second round of the 5A state playoffs on Oct. 25. The Duke commit notched 448 kills, 314 digs and 49 aces for Nation Ford (25-12-1) this season.

Vivian Harris, Nation Ford golf. The Falcon sophomore shot a two-day total of 161 (82-79, 17-over par) to finish 22nd at the 5A state championships at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence on Oct. 25-26.

Katherine Mann, Catawba Ridge golf. The Catawba Ridge junior earned all-state honors, shooting a two-day total score of 158 (77-81) to finish ninth-place at the 4A state championship at Crescent Pointe Golf Club in Bluffton on Oct. 25-26. Mann’s play helped the Catawba Ridge girls’ golf team to a third-place finish at states.

Avery Moriarty, Fort Mill cross country. The Yellow Jacket eighth-grader ran a 19:58 to win the Region 3-5A title by 18 seconds at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill on Oct. 26. Moriarty’s run helped the Fort Mill girls’ cross country team to its second straight region championship.

Ella Nighbor, Clover cross country. The Blue Eagle eighth-grader ran a 20:54 to finish fourth at the Region 3-5A championship at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill on Oct. 26. Nighbor also helped her Clover girls’ cross country to a runner-up finish at the region meet.

Christian Notarangelo, Northwestern cross country. The Trojan senior finished fifth and ran a 17:44 to lead his team at the Region 4-5A championships in Columbia on Oct. 27. The Northwestern boys’ cross country team finished third at the region championship meet.

Sam Rich, Catawba Ridge cross country. The Copperhead senior ran a 15:39.50 to win the Region 3-4A title by nearly 59 seconds at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill on Oct. 27. The Notre Dame University commit also led his Catawba Ridge cross country team to a region championship last week, too.

Timothy Shellenburger, Chester cross country. The Cyclone sophomore ran a 22:04.17 to finish a team-best, 17th-place at the Region 4-3A championships at Fairfield Central on Oct. 26. Shellenburger ran a personal-best 21:45, too, on his home course on Sept. 28.

Devon Sibley, Fort Mill cross country. The Yellow Jacket junior ran a 16:15 to win the Region 3-5A title by 24 seconds at Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill on Oct. 26. The Fort Mill boys’ cross country team also won the region championship as a team.
