Funky art, cocktails, small bites: What to know about a new bar on Fort Mill’s Main St.
Plans are in for a new bar on Fort Mill’s Main Street.
The town planning department has an application to remodel the Spratt Building at 215 Main St. The town sold that site last summer for almost $500,000. Submitted plans show remodeled space there as a Whitaker’s.
Whitaker’s is a neighborhood bar in Savannah, Georgia.
Plans show a 240-square-foot first-floor bar with a dozen chairs, an almost 800-square-foot dining room with table seating or standing bar space for almost 30 people, a kitchen, server area and restrooms on the bottom level. A top level mezzanine area adds seating for 28 patrons.
Mary Pappas with Collected Hospitality + Development said the project is in permitting and it’s too early to say when the new space will open. It will, Pappas said, carry the Whitaker’s name. Fort Mill will have the third, with a second Whitaker’s under development in Conway.
“All three stores will be comprised of Whitaker’s signature brand details such as funky artwork, alluring cocktails and interesting small bites,” Pappas said. “That said, each location will have its own spin based on the community needs and our capabilities with space and design.”
The group has two CO sites in Charlotte, offering modern Southeast Asian cuisine. The same group has The Lucky Duck on Market Street in Baxter.
“We’re excited to expand in a community in which we already call home and find familiar,” Pappas said.
The new space is one familiar for many in Fort Mill. The Spratt Building opened as a bank in 1911 and is included on the National Register of Historic Places. The town took ownership in 2001 from Jane Stacy Spratt. The same town historic review board that will decide on design elements for the new Whitaker’s project held many of its meetings there in recent years. It’s also hosted town council retreats and workshops, baby showers, book events, weddings and other events.
As far back as early 2020, town officials spoke about a planned sale of the building that could spur both private redevelopment on Main Street and help fund, through the sale, town efforts elsewhere. Specifically mentioned at the time were upgrades to Fort Mill Community Center, the former Banks Street Gym.
The planned remodel for Whitaker’s is a $350,000 project.
Whitaker’s continues a now years-long redevelopment of Main. It’s on the same side of the street as Hobo’s (which is adding a new Rock Hill location of its own), Local Dish, Towne Tavern and other spots. Opposite Whitaker’s is Improper Pig and Amor Artis Brewing.
