All Rock Hill region schools change their schedules for Wednesday, as ice lingers

Schools across the Rock Hill region will change their schedules again for Tuesday classes, amid lingering concern from ice after a weekend winter storm.

The Clover School District will close its facilities again Wednesday and go to virtual school. So will the York School District.

The Rock Hill School District, Fort Mill School District, Lancaster County School District and Chester County School District will operate on a two-hour delay.

Districts that plan to open buildings on Wednesday warn that ice could still be on road in the morning, and that drivers should use caution.

“This delay will allow for more daylight and increased safety for everyone, especially our bus drivers and young drivers,” the Rock Hill district posted on its Facebook page.

Still, districts ask drivers to give themselves plenty of time in the morning.

“Please drive with caution as traces of ice could still occur in various areas of the county,” the Chester district posted on its Facebook page. “Parents and guardians are recommended to use their best judgment and avoid going out if conditions in their area are still unsafe.”

Historic snowfall forces more Rock Hill schools schedule changes

Wednesday’s schedule change is a result of historic snowfall last weekend. National Weather Service monitoring sites across the region recorded between 6 and 9 inches of snowfall, with Sunday’s reading at one Tega Cay station showing 11.3 inches of snow.

That’s the fourth-highest single-day snowfall on record, dating back to 1899. The snow came on weekend after a massive ice storm blew through the region, which also changed school schedules for several days.

Between scheduled holidays, teacher workdays, early release schedules and winter weather, students in Fort Mill have only had one full day in classrooms since Jan. 23. Rock Hill and Fort Mill students have only had one full five-day week in schools since early December, though most of that time off came from breaks and holidays.
