Person crossing road outside Rock Hill killed after hit by SUV, trooper says
A person crossing a road outside Rock Hill Wednesday night died after being hit by an SUV, officials said.
The pedestrian killed in the collision around 6 p.m. on U.S. 21 has not yet been identified by the York County Coroner’s Office.
The person who died was crossing the highway on foot before being struck by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The driver of the SUV was not hurt, Bolt said.
The area of the crash is south of the city limits and where U.S. 21, also called South Anderson Road, intersects with Interstate 77.
Four crash fatalities in York County so far in 2023
In a separate fatality on Tuesday night further south on U.S. 21 in York County, a moped driver was killed after a collision with a van.
The fatal crashes Tuesday and Wednesday on U.S. 21 remain under investigation by the coroner’s office and the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
So far in January 2023, there have been four reported fatal crashes in York County, including the two on U.S. 21, one inside the town of Fort Mill, and one inside the Rock Hill city limits.
Two of the crashes have involved pedestrians. A pedestrian died in Wednesday night’s incident on U.S. 21 ,and in the Rock Hill incident on Jan. 5 on Celanese Road where a 12-year-old child died days after the collision.
