There’s a roost of new chicken joints. Enter another restaurant in downtown Fort Mill
If it seems like there’s a growing number of dinner options that feature chicken, get ready. Another one is on the way.
A recent zoning change in Fort Mill will allow the long-time auto repair and wrecker building across from Elisha Park to become a new chicken restaurant. The former Coleman’s Garage site at 314 N. White St. is just a short walk from Main Street.
When the project came to the town historic review board, a needed step since the property sits in a town historic district, attached renderings showed the site as Bossy Beulah’s. Town Council referred to the project as a Bossy Beulah’s during the zoning decision.
Bossy Beulah’s Chicken Shak is a Charlotte chicken sandwich and wing restaurant affiliated with the Jim Noble restaurants. Noble Food and Pursuits has a roster of almost a dozen restaurant or catering businesses. A spokesperson for the restaurant group on Tuesday said the company isn’t yet ready to discuss the Fort Mill project.
Council members spoke briefly about the project when that group made the needed zoning change earlier this month. Including Mayor Guynn Savage who sees a new restaurant across from the town-run park as a continueation of a vibrant business area the auto garage helped create in Fort Mill for many years.
“This is a good fit for that location,” she said.
The story may sound familiar. Super Chix Chicken & Custard just opened (and has been packed ever since) at Brayden. Chicken Salad Chick in Rock Hill celebrated its grand opening Tuesday. Wild Wing Cafe is about to open in front of the Regal movie theater in Rock Hill. There’s been a Helen’s Hot Chicken “coming soon” sign up for months in the former Nishie G’s spot on Mt. Gallant Road in Rock Hill.
Popular chicken spots aren’t new to the area.
Rock Hill has established eateries like Shrimp Boat, Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken, and Chicken King. There’s RoCo Rotisserie & Bar. There are numerous Fort Mill and Rock Hill wing stops like Wing King, WingBonz and Buffalo Wild Wings.
More chicken-specific or chicken-heavy options have come alongside growing communities. Indian Land saw additions of Viva Chicken and Mr. Pollo. There also are more Chick-fil-A, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Bojangles, Zaxby’s and similar restaurants than ever before. A new Fort Mill Bojangles is in the planning stage now.
Together, area chicken joints serve up wings and pieces from Southern fried to grilled, smoked, rotisserie, Peruvian and Buffalo.
Renderings sent to the town show a dining area in the former auto building with a covered patio area where the old gas pump canopy is. Parking would be just left of the building. Penelope Karagounis, town planning director, said at the recent zoning decision the new restaurant plan can add to an historical part of town.
“We’re so excited to be able to have another business close to downtown, near the park, and still keep the local history of the Town of Fort Mill with the existing building,” she said.
